Alabama Does Not Require Underinsured Motorist Coverage

Alabama law does not mandate underinsured motorist (UIM) coverage. The state requires only liability insurance: $25,000 bodily injury per person, $50,000 per accident, and $25,000 property damage. You can legally register and drive every vehicle in your household with liability alone.

That does not mean UIM is unavailable. Every carrier writing auto insurance in Alabama must offer underinsured motorist coverage on every policy. You can accept it or decline it, but the offer is mandatory. When you insure two or more vehicles on one policy, the UIM decision applies to the entire policy, not to individual cars.

A signed UIM waiver applies to every vehicle on the policy — you cannot decline coverage for one car and accept it for another.

Alabama Uninsured Motorist Rate

16.8%

Nearly one in six Alabama drivers carries no insurance. When an at-fault driver's liability limit is lower than your medical bills or repair costs, underinsured motorist coverage pays the difference up to your UIM limit.

How the Offer Requirement Works on a Multi-Car Policy

Alabama Code §32-7-23 requires carriers to offer UIM coverage in amounts equal to your liability limits unless you reject it in writing. The offer applies to the policy, not to each vehicle separately. If you insure three cars on one policy, you accept or decline UIM once for all three.

The waiver is a signed document. Most carriers present it during the quote or binding process. If you add a fourth vehicle mid-term, the existing waiver remains in effect unless you request UIM at that time. The coverage decision follows the policy structure, not the vehicle count.

Declining UIM on a multi-car policy means none of the vehicles carry it. You cannot accept it for one car and decline it for another on the same policy. If household members drive different vehicles and you want UIM protection on only some of them, those vehicles must sit on separate policies.

A signed UIM waiver applies to every vehicle on the policy. You cannot decline coverage for one car and accept it for another without splitting the policy.

What Underinsured Motorist Coverage Pays

UIM coverage activates when the at-fault driver's liability limit is lower than your damages. It does not replace liability insurance; it supplements it when the other driver's policy falls short.

Alabama is an at-fault state. When another driver causes a collision, their liability insurance pays your medical bills and repair costs up to their policy limit.

UIM applies to bodily injury only in Alabama. It does not cover vehicle damage. If the at-fault driver's property damage limit is too low to repair your car, you file under your own collision coverage if you carry it, or you pursue the at-fault driver directly for the shortfall. UIM limits typically match your liability limits, so if you carry $50,000 per person in liability, your UIM offer is $50,000 per person unless you request a lower amount in writing.

How Adding Vehicles Changes the UIM Decision

When you add a second or third vehicle to an existing Alabama policy, the UIM status does not automatically change. If you declined UIM when you bought the first car, the waiver remains in effect when you add the second. If you accepted UIM on the original policy, the new vehicle is covered at the same limit without a new offer.

You can change your UIM election at renewal or mid-term by contacting the carrier. Adding UIM mid-term re-rates the policy for the remaining term. Dropping UIM mid-term requires a new signed waiver. Most carriers allow the change online or by phone, but the waiver signature is mandatory under Alabama law.

Households with drivers who have different risk profiles sometimes split policies to control UIM costs. A parent insuring a teen driver on a separate policy can decline UIM on the teen's policy and accept it on the household policy covering two other vehicles. The split requires separate policy numbers and separate billing, and it eliminates the multi-car discount across the divided vehicles.

Carriers That Write Multi-Car Policies in Alabama

Alabama has a deep carrier roster. State Farm, GEICO, Progressive, Allstate, and Nationwide all write multi-car policies statewide and offer UIM coverage at the mandatory limits. Acceptance Insurance, Bristol West, Dairyland, Direct Auto, and The General write non-standard policies and also offer UIM, though their base premiums and UIM add-on costs differ from preferred-tier carriers.

When comparing carriers for a multi-car household, request quotes with and without UIM. The premium difference is the cost of the coverage. Some carriers price UIM as a percentage of liability premium; others use a flat per-vehicle fee. The structure affects total cost when you insure three or more vehicles, so the lowest liability-only quote may not remain the lowest when UIM is added.

Compare Carriers for Your Household

Alabama does not require underinsured motorist coverage, but 16.8% of drivers carry no insurance, and many more carry only the $25,000 per person minimum. UIM protects every vehicle on your policy when the at-fault driver's limit is too low. Declining it saves premium but leaves you exposed to out-of-pocket costs after a serious collision.

Compare quotes from carriers writing your county. Request UIM limits that match your liability limits, and compare the premium difference across the vehicles you insure. The decision applies to the entire policy, so evaluate it in the context of your household's total exposure, not individual cars.
